Curtis Powell

Director of Staff & Volunteer Development

Curt was born on Whidbey Island where his parents worked in youth ministry, but grew up in Lynden, Washington. Here, Curt was mentored through Young Life where he first experienced the beauty of incarnational ministry.

Curt attended Whitworth University in Spokane, graduating with degrees in Peace Studies, Theology, and Leadership Studies. He spent his college years playing football, running track, working in residence life, and volunteering with Young Life Capernaum - a ministry to kids with disabilities. Whitworth opened the doors for Curt to study throughout South Africa, work in youth ministry in South Side of Chicago, and serve alongside youth in Dondo, Mozambique with his then major crush (and now lovely wife), Alicia.

After Whitworth, Curt received his Master’s in Counseling from Creighton University. He married Alicia and the two spent the next five years in Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic. They worked for Doulos Discovery School where they counseled, taught, Curt coached basketball, and they both volunteered with Young Life. They had their first child, Fenna, in the DR. The Powells returned to Spokane to have their second child, Opal. In Spokane, Curt worked for Young Life for two years, volunteering his time in the Hillyard neighborhood, before transitioning to Youth for Christ.

Team Powell lives in West Central, and are committed to loving their neighbors. Both Curtis and Alicia work in the neighborhood - Curtis with YFC and Alicia with Immanuel Church. The Powells were drawn to Youth For Christ because of our focus on relational, holistic, neighborhood-focused youth ministry. Curt believes deeply in our vision cultivating indigenous leaders from our neighborhood who impact our neighborhood for Jesus. He can’t wait to invite others into this big and beautiful mission.
